What are those weird sounds coming from my HVAC unit?

There are three types of sounds that might come from your HVAC unit; rattling, hissing, and clanking. A rattling sound means that you might have an object stuck in your unit somewhere. Even though there is a grate which prevents big objects from entering your system, there could be smaller objects in there under the right circumstances. Hissing sounds mean that you could have an air leak in your HVAC system somewhere. Clanking sounds could indicate that you might have loose components or parts in your system. Maybe one of the blades or fans is rubbing against other parts because they’re loose.

Is preventive maintenance important?

HVAC systems are constantly in operation to produce hot or cool air. Due to all the stress that they’re under, they consume a lot of power and tend to wear down rather fast. Because of this, you need to regularly maintain your HVAC unit to ensure you get the longest lifespan out of it. Otherwise, it will cost you a lot of money to have it repaired or replaced in case something goes wrong. Preventive maintenance usually just means conducting inspections for things like dirt, worn wires, rust, corrosion, and leaks.  If you can spot them early on, you can clean or fix them before they make things worse.

Which equipment of the HVAC system do I need to maintain?

You will want to check the air ductwork, heating and cooling coils, air compressor, blower (fan), refrigerant, and filter. A professional can do this for you if you’re not confident about doing it yourself. It will be easy to recognise when these components look dirty because they will be covered with a dirty substance. As long as the component is not worn down or damaged, you can clean it without having to replace it.
